This motherboard is what I need. Just essentials.
The fan is a nightmare, even after reducing the speed to 25% it is inacceptable.
So I replaced the fan with an "ultra silent" Papst fan. Better, but still too loud.
My final solution was the replacement of the chipset fan (the processor has no fan) with a passive cooler, the "Alpenföhn Ötzi Northbridge Cooler".
This passive cooler fits 100% on the chipset and slightly touches the passive cooler of the processor (which is no problem). You can install the Alpenföhn without the installation kit. Just use the original clamp from the motherboard. Result: 43 degrees maximum chipset temperature, which is even better than the fan solution.
Additionally, I have installed a very silent 120mm fan (running at 25% speed) at the back and a Enermax power supply 82+ (do not hear anything from this power supply).
FreeBSD 8.0 stable works fine with the board, I have installed an old Adaptec RAID 2400A and two 500GB Seagate IDE HDD, mirrored. The raid mirrors system and data.
Now, I have an ultra silent and quite fast file server in my office.
