 "Nothing but problems" 2010-07-28
By Joe Menthol (Oregon, US)
I needed something really small for a custom project and mini-itx was actually too big. This board seemed to fit the bill, but so far I have not been able to get it to work at all.

Got everything hooked up and powered on; at first boot the BIOS splash screen showed but then locked up and didn't do anything else. On restart no video signal. I double-checked all the jumpers, cleared the CMOS, made sure all the connections were good, removed all unneeded components, but it was no use. Tried the RCA and S-Video options but no luck there either. The heatsink fan would spin and if I connected a drive it would spin up/make noise, but no video signal and no BIOS beep codes. Fiddled with it for about 3 hours trying different things, but nothing.

The only thing I didn't try at this point was reseating the RAM. This is a huge pain because the RAM installs flat under one side of the processor heatsink with clips that do NOT want to be removed and are hard to manipulate. I finally couldn't think of anything else to try so I gave it a shot. Out of curiosity, after I got the heatsink off I removed the RAM and tried to boot it; it gave BIOS beep errors for no RAM (which it should have) so I was hopeful the board wasn't dead. I reseated the ram, booted, and got the BIOS splash screen again! Hooray!... except it locked up again the same way it did initially. Tried rebooting, back to no video signal. Further reseating of the RAM has not fixed the video signal problem since.

I checked all over the board looking for physical damage or some kind of short but have found nothing. I'm at a loss.

Support is a joke. There's no printed manual, no useful instructions, just some generic warnings and some leaflets that weren't even for my model. Had to go to VIAs website to find anything and even then the PDF I found there was very minimal and didn't offer any kind of troubleshooting tips or advice. There's virtually no community for these boards either, so if you have a problem like I did you are basically SOL.
